Every year Maryland Line VFC must test their hose in order to make sure it will function properly during an emergency situation.

The hose testing consists of pumping each "lay" of hose for a set amount of pressure and a set amount of time. This includes what we call crosslays which are the hoses that are mostly used on the typical residential house fire and are pulled from the center of the engine. Also included is all of our supply line which is a lot thicker and is used to supply water from the fire hydrant or water source to the engine on the scene of a fire, this type of hose usually comes off the back of the fire engine.

We must lay every foot of hose that we have in order to accomplish this and as you could imagine, that takes a while so it was all hands on deck. Thankfully, we had a lot of help and were able to get it done within 3 hours and now we can be sure that when we respond to an emergency all of our hose will be fully tested and operational.
